The Measure of a Life: Wealth That Cannot Be Held

By Kateb Nuri-Alim Shunnar

A lot can be revealed about a person not by the fortune they amass or the titles they pursue but by how they act when there is nothing to gain. True greatness has nothing to do with bank accounts or ostentatious accolades. It’s in the little things the silent choices, the invisible moments, the way a person treats others when no one is looking. It’s about having a spine and standing on principles and leaving people better than you found them.

I’ve known people who had money coming out of their ears but left nothing but void in their wake. And I’ve also met people who had little more than two penniless cents to rub together, but who navigated life with such a bounty of spirit that they made all of us in their orbit feel like we meant the world. That’s the sort of wealth you can’t put in a bank.

Look at Alexander the Great. The man who had mastered half the known world, who had pleasures in number beyond counting, who could bend nations to his will. But when the end arrived, all his power and gold couldn’t purchase another breath. His last wishes? To have his doctors carry his coffin to demonstrate that even the best healers can’t outrun death. So his wealth could be strewn on the road to remind people that material riches are anchored in place. And for his hands to hang empty over his casket to show that we leave this world just the way we came into it: with nothing.

That right there says it all. No one’s going to remember the square footage of your house or the figures in your account. Tell me what sticks, it’s how you make them feel. Did you show kindness when it wasn’t necessary? Did you bring light or leave shadows when you were there? That’s the true measure of a life well-lived.

So don’t use the yardstick of possessions to assess your life and existence. You are not defined by the things you own. My Dear Ones, It’s not the money or fame you cull; it’s the love you give, the wisdom you share, and The lives you touch along the way That leave a mark long after you are gone.

When it’s all said and done, greatness isn’t determined by what you possess it’s determined by what you give, how you show up for those around you, and what legacy you imprint on their hearts.
