Tears Are Temporary: A Reflection on Pain, Sorrow, and the Promise of Joy

Tears Are Temporary: A Reflection on Pain, Sorrow, and the Promise of Joy

By Kateb Nuri-Alim Shunnar

Tears have a way of flowing when we feel like we're drowning in emotion. It’s that moment when we’ve carried too much inside, and it finally spills over. Sometimes, we can’t control it. But as overwhelming as these moments are, we need to remind ourselves they’re only temporary. Those tears aren’t a symbol of defeat. They’re a release, a way for our hearts to breathe after being weighed down. Like a passing rainstorm, they cleanse but don’t last forever.

Every tear that falls holds a story a story of pain, of struggle, of loss. Yet even though it feels like the tears won’t stop, they will. Just as rain eventually gives way to clear skies, our tears pave the way for healing, for peace. It might not feel like it in the moment, but after the night passes, joy waits for us on the other side.

We might weep through the night, but the morning will come. And with it, a promise of peace and relief. It’s in the Creator’s nature to bring balance a time to cry, and a time to heal. The sunrise each day is the Creator’s way of showing us that no matter how dark the night, light always follows. Joy will rise, even when we think it’s impossible.

In those heavy moments, it’s easy to believe the sadness will stay forever. But that’s the beauty of life it shifts. The tears that seem endless right now are clearing space in our souls, making room for joy to settle in. The Creator doesn’t leave us to drown in sorrow. Our cries don’t go unheard. In fact, it’s during those moments of raw emotion that we’re most connected to the divine, even if we don’t realize it.

Think about it how many times have we been brought to the edge of despair, only to realize later that we made it through? That we found strength we didn’t know we had? Those long, tear-filled nights seemed unending, but somehow, here we are. Standing. Breathing. Blessed. We’re living proof that the darkest times don’t define our entire journey. The sun always rises. And when it does, we realize that the night was shorter than we thought.

I’ve been through my share of those dark nights. There have been times when my tears felt like the only company I had. Times when the weight of life was so heavy, I couldn’t see beyond the pain. But those nights taught me something: tears don’t just express sorrow they make space for joy. They wash away what’s been holding us down, and in return, the Creator fills those empty spaces with peace and hope. It’s this hope that carries us from one day to the next, until we wake up one morning and realize the sun has come out again.

And when that moment comes when we finally stop crying it’s a relief unlike anything else. It’s the Creator’s promise coming to life. The realization that joy, not sorrow, is what we’re meant to carry. That’s the gift. It’s the peace that replaces the storm. A peace so sweet that we no longer feel the need to cry.

Can anyone relate? Haven’t we all been there? We’ve all had nights where tears felt like they would never end, but somehow, we’re still standing. Still breathing. The tears are gone, and in their place, we carry a reminder of the Creator’s grace. A reminder that, yes, the pain was real, but it didn’t last forever. It didn’t have the final say. Our tears were a chapter, not the whole story.

So if you’re going through a season of tears, know this: they’re just a release. They’re making room for something bigger. Something better. Hold on to the truth that your pain is temporary, and your joy is permanent. The Creator has a plan, even when we can’t see it. The dawn is coming, and with it, a peace so deep, you’ll wonder why you ever doubted.

And when the sun finally breaks through, you’ll feel it the joy that was promised. A joy that stays with you. A joy that transforms the pain into peace. And in that peace, you’ll find rest. You won’t have to cry anymore.
