Seeing the Value in Unwanted Gifts
By Kateb Nuri-Alim Shunnar
Sometimes, life doesn’t hand us what we want. Other times, it delivers something we never asked for—leaving us irritated and unsatisfied. But just because something isn’t what we want doesn’t mean it isn’t exactly what we need. These surprise package gifts are often precisely what we need to become our best selves, even when they don't quite look or feel that way yet.
If we fail to cherish and use these gifts or treat them well, it may be to our loss. The lack of gratitude doesn’t lower their significance; it merely exposes our own short-sightedness. Every gift, whether asked for or not, contains a lesson or opportunity that could ripple throughout the rest of our lives. The Divine, of course, knows what we need despite our blindfolded perspective.
It’s easy to forget that our actions, words, and deeds are always seen. Our appreciation shows in how we react to the people, opportunities, and situations that come our way. If we throw our hands up and neglect what has been given to us, we may later realize that we pushed away something we truly needed. The burden of regret often arrives too late, leaving us haunted by missed chances and past mistakes.
Keep this in mind the next time you are handed something unexpected. Rather than ignore it, try reframing your loneliness, frustration, or disappointment as an invitation to gain insights that could accelerate your growth. Be thankful for what life throws your way—whether it’s twists and turns or straight paths lined with velvet ribbons. This is the true essence of living: the surprise element built into each day. By appreciating it all, you acknowledge that wisdom always lies at its core. Perhaps later on, you’ll realize it was good that something didn’t work out because now you are wiser and more experienced.
