My Heart Was Washed

By Kateb Shunnar

My heart got washed in rivers of light,

Sparks of mercy turned my darkness bright.

The doubts that clung like heavy old chains

Slipped away, leaving only the rains.

I’ve stumbled through nights where fear held me tight,

But whispers of Spirit brought soft, gentle light.

Each tear that fell was a seed in disguise,

Sprouting forgiveness before my own eyes.

The currents of heaven carried me slow,

Past jagged shadows I used to know.

Sunbeams like fingers reached deep in my chest,

Tucking the broken pieces to rest.

Storms might return, pounding the shore,

But my heart now holds a river and more.

Each beat is a hymn, a soft, quiet prayer,

Proof of a love that’s endlessly there.

I feel it in whispers, in winds, in the skies,

In the hum of creation and the stars in my eyes.

A messy, bright cosmos inside me will stay,

Guiding me forward when the night steals the day.
